More Than Singing – Finding Your Place in Musical Theatre

When people hear the word musical, they often picture performers on stage, singing and dancing under bright lights. But musical theatre is so much more than that — the people on stage are only one part of the creative process. Every production is made possible by many different talents working together, and at Luxicals we have come to see that as the very heart of what we do.
Creativity exists everywhere
Some people love to sing. Others prefer acting. Some are drawn to lighting design, others to building scenery, organising costumes, running sound or helping backstage — and every one of these roles matters just as much as the next. In fact, around a third of our members in Luxembourg are not regular performers on stage at all. Instead, they contribute behind the scenes: through technical work, organisation, stage management, production or creative ideas. For us, musical theatre isn’t about finding the perfect performer. It’s about finding the right place for every person.
When we think of creativity, we tend to think of writing songs or performing. But creativity lives in many other places too:
- Designing a stage set
- Creating lighting atmospheres
- Planning costumes
- Building props
- Programming sound effects
- Organising rehearsals
- Designing posters and visual materials
- Managing social media
- Coordinating productions
Every department has its own artistic challenges. A lighting designer tells part of the story through colour and mood. A sound technician helps shape emotion. A set designer builds the world the story lives in. Even organising rehearsals takes real creativity and problem-solving.

There is no “right” way to do musical theatre
One of the biggest misconceptions about musical theatre is that every production needs a huge stage, a full orchestra and expensive sets. Big productions can be spectacular, of course — but smaller ones can be just as powerful. Sometimes a musical only needs a few performers, a piano, simple lighting and minimal scenery, and that very simplicity lets the audience focus even more on the story and the emotions.
At Luxicals we have performed with live musicians, with piano accompaniment and with backing tracks; every format opens up different creative possibilities. The goal is never to build the biggest production — it’s to create the best possible experience with the resources we have.

Working together
Every production involves decisions. What can we afford? What is possible in a particular venue? What technical equipment is available? How many people are involved? Every project has its own limitations — but limitations often spark creativity. A simple stage design can turn out more effective than a complex one; a single piano can carry more emotion than a full orchestra. So much of musical theatre is about finding creative solutions together.

There is a place for everyone
Many people assume they can’t join a musical group because they don’t sing, or because they don’t feel comfortable on stage. But musical theatre needs far more than performers. It needs technicians, designers, organisers, writers, photographers, stage managers and creative thinkers — and sometimes it simply needs people who love theatre and want to help.
Not everyone needs to do everything. Not everyone needs to stand in the spotlight. The most important thing is finding the role that feels right for you.
More than a hobby
Over time, many musical groups become something larger than a production team. People pick up new skills. They discover hidden talents. They grow in confidence. Friendships form. And together, they create something none of them could have made alone.
The audience may only see two hours on stage — but behind those two hours lie months of creativity, teamwork, discussion, rehearsal, technical planning and shared experience. Because musical theatre isn’t simply about singing or acting. It’s about creating something together — and there is a place in that process for everyone.
